Davidson Day topples Victory Christian at Charlotte Hoops Challenge
Davidson Day’s defense led the Patriots to the championship in the Charlotte Hoops Challenge Buckets Brand tournament at Myers Park High School.
In addition to the normal round-robin format, tournament organizers added a four-team tournament among independent schools this year.
Davidson Day boys jumped out to an early lead and held Victory Christian to 37 percent shooting as the Patriots defeated the Kings 53-41 Saturday.
Davidson Day (8-0) never trailed, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead in the opening quarter. They would led 11-7 after one quarter, and Victory Christian would cut the lead to 17-14 with 4:32 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Jonathan McCollum.
That would be Victory Christian’s last points of the half. Davidson Day closed the second quarter on a 7-0 run keyed by two jump hooks by CJ Huntley, and the Patriots led 24-14 at the break.
Davidson Day kept the run going in the third, scoring the first eight points to gain their largest lead of the game, 32-14 and holding Victory Christian scoreless for total of 7:59 of game action.
Victory Christian never quit, and cut the lead to nine, 45-36, with 2:10 left but would get no closer.
Davidson Day was lethal at the free throw line, making 10-of-11 in the fourth quarter and the Patriots were 16-for-17 for the game.
▪ Davidson Day’s defense has been strong early in the 2019-20 season, as they’ve allowed only one opponent to score more than 50 points and they are allowing opponents only 35 points on average.
▪ The Patriots also took care of the ball, as the scrappy Victory Christian team was only able to force six turnovers and only two in the second half.
“That was key for us, Davidson Day head coach Ron Johnson said. “We were able to keep things under control and that goes to (point guard) Adam Brazil (zero turnovers in 30 minutes on court). He’s big for us and I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that he’s a really good basketball player.”
▪ Jackson Threadgill led all scorers for Davidson Day with 17 points (12-12 from the free throw line) while Huntley had 14 and Will Coble added 11. Victory Christian was led by Seth Smith with 11 while McCollum and Tyreke Thompson each had 8.
