Davidson Day Hires Al Wilson, Jr., as Varsity Girls Basketball Coach
DAVIDSON, North Carolina (June 10, 2019) – Davidson Day School is pleased to announce Al Wilson, Jr. as the varsity girls basketball coach.
With fifteen years of coaching and administrative experience in collegiate and high schools, Wilson focuses on developing character, integrity, and accountability for students and student-athletes.
Since 2016, Wilson has served as the head boys’ basketball coach at Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. An accomplished collegiate and professional athlete himself, winning two state championships as a player at Benedictine High School who later went on to play at the University of Toledo, Wilson later joined his alma mater as an assistant for the Benedictine boys varsity team from 2009–2011. He earned the head boys basketball coach position at Benedictine in 2011–2012.
Off the court, Wilson is an accomplished school administrator. At Mountain Mission School, Wilson was the director of student development, coordinating student schedules and holding student conduct meetings. At Benedictine, Wilson served as a dean of students, supervising faculty, staff, and a guidance director while communicating with students, parents, and families.
Wilson’s resume also includes a role as the first athletic director and head basketball coach for Indianapolis Metropolitan High School from 2006–2009. While there, Wilson’s boys’ basketball team won a Charter School State Championship.
“I am honored and excited to serve as the head girls’ basketball coach at Davidson Day,” said Wilson. "My goal is to develop character, integrity, and accountability in young people, empowering them to create a vision to reach individual goals, as well as team goals and objectives."
Wilson will begin his work at Davidson Day during the summer of 2019. He will be joined in the Davidson Day community by his wife and four children.
Wilson joins Davidson Day as the school enters a new conference, the Foothills Athletic Conference, as a charter member. At Davidson Day, Wilson is tasked with the further growth of the girls’ basketball program and will oversee student-athlete development from middle school through varsity.
“Al is an excellent addition to our Davidson Day coaching staff and school community,” said Ron Johnson, Davidson Day’s Athletic Director. “His coaching experience, passion for basketball, and devotion to cultivating an environment that challenges students to become their best will bolster our already strong girls’ basketball program.”
Davidson Day School won the NCISAA 2-A Private State Championship in 2019, defeating the O’Neal School 62–45 on February 23, 2019.
