Davidson Day quarterback Sam Hartman committed to Wake Forest Tuesday night, and he may be the school’s highest-profile quarterback recruit in 17 years.

Hartman played in 10 games as a sophomore, his first season playing varsity football. He completed 168-of-260 passes for 2,655 yards and 24 touchdowns. He had four interceptions and led Davidson Day to the N.C. Independent Schools Division I state championship.

247Sports ranks Hartman the nation’s No. 12 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2018. Blogger So Dear, a blog that follows Deacons recruiting, said Hartman could be the best quarterback recruit in the history of the program if his national ranking holds.

Back in February 1999, Independence High QB C.J. Leak shocked the recruiting world by choosing Wake Forest over Penn State and Notre Dame. Leak was ranked the No. 5 overall quarterback by SuperPrep and was a two-time high school All-American. He injured his knee in this third game at Wake and later transferred to Tennessee.
