Davidson Day QB Sam Howell national passing leader

Davidson Day quarterback Sam Hartman has put together two of the top 10 single-game passing performances in Mecklenburg County history to start his junior season.

That has landed him atop the nation’s passing leaders.

Hartman’s total of 1,061 yards is well ahead of Jake Fromm (Houston County, Ga.) who has 866, according to MaxPreps. Two N.C. players are in the top 10: Bishop McGuinness’ Peter Ingle (765) is third and Clayton’s Landen Leiser (734) is fifth.

About a month ago, Hartman underwent surgery to remove a baseball-sized growth from his neck, a bacterial infection that caused him to lose more than 20 pounds. He has verbally committed to Wake Forest.

▪ Davidson Day receiver Nolan Groulx, a sophomore, is second nationally in receiving with 477 yards.
