Gibbons Athletics continues to grow in size and scope by adding new initiatives,
such as the recent sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and intramural programs. The next step in that evolution is the creation of an Athletic Leadership and Legacy Program.
To head that program Gibbons is excited to welcome home former Athletic Director Dean Monroe, a nationally certified athletics administrator (CMAA) who brings with him more than 25 years experience in secondary school athletics administration. Monroe, who also coached numerous sports at Gibbons, including varsity football and the boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams, will assume the position of Director of Athletic Leadership and Legacy in November. He returns to Gibbons after serving four years as Athletic Director at Saint Mary's School in Raleigh. (Dean Monroe, pictured right with Principal Jason D. Curtis)
Gibbons Athletic Director Todd Schuler describes the new program as part of the overall vision for the Athletics Department. That vision, he says, includes creating an environment in which every student, coach, and parent has the opportunity to take part and become engaged in athletics.
To realize that vision, "our focus will be on helping student-athletes and coaches grow as leaders," Schuler notes. Monroe, he adds, has the "pastoral quality, empathy, and experience" needed to interact, mentor, and help them develop the leadership skills they
need to succeed.
Monroe will also work with Assistant Principal of Student Activities Michael Rogosich in ensuring that students' participation in athletics focuses on living out the school's mission in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community. "We challenge all our teams to live the mission and engage in service," which includes caring for one another, as well as for our parents, and for our opponents, says Schuler.
In his new position, Monroe will also increase efforts to connect alumni with Gibbons through athletics, and will work in partnership with the Advancement Department and Alumni Coordinator Joey Hoying. Those efforts include developing new programs and enhancing existing ones that connect alumni with faculty, coaches and peers. As an example, Schuler points to the alumni men's lacrosse game during Thanksgiving break that is a nearly 20-year tradition. The goal, he notes," is to have every sport emulate such a tradition."
Another example is engaging alumni through the Gibbons Athletics Hall of Fame. Now in its fourth year, it serves, among other things, to educate students about the talented athletes and coaches who have been involved with Gibbons athletics; instill and continue the sport's program tradition of excellence and success; and link past and current generations of student-athletes. Monroe, who was one of the six inaugural hall of fame inductees, "is the right person to help us grow in this area," Schuler says.
Principal Jason D. Curtis adds, "I'm grateful for Todd Schuler's vision in bringing such an accomplished athletics administrator back to our campus and leading our school in taking the next steps in creating a truly exceptional athletics program for our students and coaches. Dean Monroe is such an important part of our community and deeply committed to our school's mission, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside him again."
Curtis notes that Monroe, who served Gibbons as Athletic Director from 1990 through 2012, laid the foundation for today's success and scope of our Athletics Department by facilitating many growth opportunities throughout his tenure at Gibbons.
For his part, Monroe says he is thrilled to take this next step in his career in a place he and his family consider home. "I have so many deep connections and friendships within the Gibbons community, which makes this return a natural choice," Monroe adds. "It is also an opportunity that allows me to focus on aspects of athletics that I am passionate about, aspects that go beyond the scoreboard like supporting one another and being involved in service in the community."
As for the future, Monroe says he is looking forward to working closely with Gibbons student-athletes and coaches, "as we continue to strive for excellence while living out our mission."
Of the new Athletic Leadership and Legacy Program Schuler concludes: "It is not only about shaping the culture and leadership development of Gibbons Athletics, but also about creating a positive force for change in high school athletics."
Monroe, he adds, will play a pivotal role in that change.
