CHARLOTTE
A group of the top 26 North Carolina private school boys basketball players were on display Saturday as Providence Day School hosted its second annual All-Star basketball game at the Mosack Athletic Center.
The West All-Stars Rajon Tucker (Northside Christian) stole the show by leading all scorers with 26 points, but the East All-Stars romped 125-104. The all-star game format had the teams playing two 20-minute halves instead of the usual four eight-minute quarters. Each team took turns lighting up the scoreboard as both crossed the century mark.
The East all stars were coached by Freddy Johnson from Greensboro Day, the winningest coach in North Carolina history with over 900 career victories. Burlington School's Ron Johnson coached the West. Johnson has 300 career victories plus a state title with Cannon School in 2006.
The East all stars got double figures from six players, led by Greensboro Day's Peter Agba and Trinity Christian's Alonzo Tyson, who each poured in 16 points. David Reynolds (Ravenscroft) added 15, Will Crandell, from Greenfield School and a Winston-Salem State commit, scored 11, while Greensboro Day's Trevor Mayo and High Point Christian's Michael Provenzano each contributed 10 for the East.
Tucker thrilled the crowd with his one- and two-handed circus dunks which would have filled up any large highlight reel. "It was a lot of fun playing with players of equal talent out there," said Tucker, who has committed to Florida Gulf Coast.
In addition to Tucker's 26 points, the West got double-figure performances from Charles Minlend Jr. (Concord First Assembly) with 15 and Charlotte Christian's Trey Phills with ten. Phills, the son of the late and former Charlotte Hornets NBA forward Bobby Phills, has committed to Yale.
Johnson credited two areas that his East all-star team excelled in to come out on top. "They all hustled and all attempted to play defense, which in an all-star game you really don't see that often," he said.
Ron Johnson felt honored to have been selected to coach the West. "Yes, absolutely it was," said Johnson. "I've coached for a while, and to have an opportunity to coach against Freddy was a good thing. I enjoyed it and it's definitely a highlight."
Providence Day boys coach Brian Field, who along with Chargers girls coach Josh Springer launched the private school all-star game last year, was happy with the second year of the event. "The guys played well and it was a lot of fun to have them out one more time to play and finish up their high school careers on a positive note," he said. "We had a great crowd and we sort of took it to the next level this year. I'm pleased."
