CONCORD, N.C. - Although quarterback Harper Woods threw three interceptions in the first half, he made up for it by throwing three touchdown passes to guide cfa Academy (1-1) to its first victory of the season, 27-14, over Cannon School (1-1) at Randy Marion Field Friday night.

On the Eagles’ first possession, Cannon’s Connor Yang picked off the pass at the cfa 35 and returned it to the nine-yard line. Four plays later, Cougar senior fullback Ben Wyatt scored on a two-yard run.

Woods threw his first TD of the game when he connected with Josh Oreon for a 74-yard touchdown to tie the game, 7-7.

The Cougars scored again in the first quarter after Wyatt intercepted another Woods pass, and Yang scored from two yards out to give Cannon a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Woods ran for a touchdown and threw scores of 77 and 15 yards to sophomore wide receiver Dwayne Crawford.

A defensive battle broke out in the second half, as neither team scored.

“Our defense really played great,” Eagles coach Craig Kean said. “If we didn’t make any turnovers, they might not even have scored on us. I’m sure glad Dwayne plays for our team.”

Cannon coach Brad Hoover said it would have been a different outcome if his Cougars could have stopped Crawford, who had seven receptions for 185 yards.

“(Crawford) is a great athlete,” Hoover said. “I knew coming in that they had a couple of kids who were more athletic than our kids. We just tried to minimize what they were doing.”

Cannon quarterback Mason McLaughlin went 12-for-24 for 97 yards with two interceptions.
