INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. - Sixth-seeded cfa Academy shocked previously undefeated Metrolina Christian, 27-20, Friday night in the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II playoffs.
The Eagles (7-4) advanced to play second-seeded Wake Christian Academy (8-3) in the semifinals in Raleigh next Friday.
“All I can say is we shocked those people over in Union County,” said cfa Academy coach Craig Kean.
The Eagles trailed at halftime, 7-6, after sophomore tight end Bailey Benham snagged a 5-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Josh Orean.
Metrolina and cfa Academy scored two more times to tie at 20. Orean threw his second touchdown pass after Julius Felder caught it 10 yards from the line of scrimmage and bolted 50 yards for the score.
Bryan Jacob’s scored the Eagles’ third touchdown on the ground from 5 yards out. With four minutes remaining, the Eagles went ahead for good, when Orean recorded his third touchdown pass, this time a 5-yarder to Felder.
“(While) our kids were ready to play all four quarters, I could see it in (Metrolina’s) eyes that they didn’t have it in them to go deep into the game,” Kean said. “We just wore them out.”
