Trojans’ bounce back season ends in semifinals

Bethel Christian falls to Northeast, 30-26

LASKER- Bethel Christian traveled to Northeast Academy looking to get to the NCISAA Division 1 8 man football state title game. However, it was the Eagles who staged a comeback to advance, 30-26. Despite having a 20-0 lead in the first half, Brick Crowder’s team fell short of an upset.

Bethel Christian’s Rodney Warren scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half. But Northeast’s JT Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown with just minutes to go in the fourth to send his team to the state title game. Northeast will travel to Halifax Academy next Saturday afternoon.

“We got one senior and for this team to progress throughout the season, I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Brick Crowder said after the game. “This team has shown a lot of resolve through diversity throughout the year. I’m blessed and privileged to work with this staff and these players. Sometimes you have to take a loss like this to be a better program.”

While their season didn’t end the way they wanted Bethel Christian will return a bulk of their starting lineup including Warren, Connor Williams, Jeremiah Washington, and Quan Hamilton next season. They should be back in the state championship picture again, but losing Cody Dunk will hurt according to coach Crowder. He had nothing but praise for his only senior.

“Cody has done everything the right way on and off the field, Crowder said. “He started at defensive back for us when we won states in 2016. He leads by example on the field and in the classroom. This program will miss an amazing player and when my son grows up, I want him to be just like Cody Dunk.”
