Following a 1-8 2017 season, the Bethel Christian Academy football team secured a 2018 playoff berth after the 52-24 win over Community Christian School.
The game started off just how the Trojans (3-3, 2-1) hoped it would, as the lone senior on the team, running back Cody Dunk took the opening hand-off to the house. After a CCS (1-6, 1-5) touchdown and two-point conversion gave them the lead, Dunk was then able to regain the lead right back with a kickoff return for a touchdown on the following play.
Dunk wasn’t finished on the day, as he also made his mark felt on the defensive end. With CCS pushing to tie or take the lead from the BCA four-yard line, Dunk made a great defensive play at the one-yard line, picking off the CCS pass.
With Dunk’s strong play on all aspects of the field jump started BCA, he made sure to give credit to his teammates for putting him in the position to make plays early.
“It started with the team effort,” Dunk said. “My O-line blocked for me, I just read the holes and got there and hit it hard as the coach tells me.”
Dunk’s second-quarter interception led to a 99-yard touchdown from quarterback Connor Williams to receiver Quan Hamilton, as Hamilton caught the pass and outran every CCS defender for nearly 70 yards after the catch. That play jump-started the offense and ultimately shifted the momentum in favor of BCA.
Following the impressive 99 yard score, Hamilton said he had just one thought in his mind when he caught the ball, and that was to run as fast as he could to outrun his defenders.
“I was blessed to get away,” Hamilton said. “I had to get away, don’t let him catch you.”
For BCA head coach Brick Crowder, knowing his team will reach the postseason is a great feeling following such a rough 2017 campaign. He said he was proud of how his team played in such a meaningful game, clinching a playoff berth following a year in which his team had an early exit.
“Oh man, it feels so wonderful,” Crowder said. “We’re so proud of our guys, we fought through so much adversity. You know a 1-7 season last year, to fight back in our conference, now we are 2-1, we’re headed to the state playoffs, heading into our last regular season for our lone senior Cody Dunk, and we want to send him out the right way, so we are excited about that opportunity.”
