Riding a two-game winning streak, the Bethel Christian Academy Trojans hosted the Lawrence Academy Warriors, a team whose last appearance in the Kinston area was a 26-0 rain-soaked forfeit against Arendell Parrott Academy.

The winless Warriors were no match for their conference rivals as the Trojans romped all over their opponents, rushing for 447 yards and winning by a score of 44-6. With the win, Bethel improves to 2-0 against conference teams and 3-3 on the season.

“This is a huge win for our program,” said Bethel coach Brick Crowder. “It’s a great feeling to move to 2-0 in the conference. We are a first year program. We are building excitement here at Bethel and people are starting to really get behind this. It’s wonderful.”

Bethel got things started early. On the first play of the game, Javon Edwards took the handoff, swept to the left, and ran for a 46-yard touchdown. After Lawrence went three-and-out, Edwards took another handoff to the left, this time on a 55-yard run down the sidelines.

On their second possession of the game, the Warriors made it interesting. Two long runs by Jarrett Harrell put Lawrence Academy on the Bethel 3, but a fumble and three incomplete passes left them off the scoreboard. Bethel made them pay for it on the ensuing possession when Edwards ran across the middle, cut right, and took off for a 77-yard run. A two-point conversion put Bethel up 22-0.

At the start of the second quarter, Edwards ran for a 65-yard touchdown run. After Cody Dunk snagged an interception on the Warriors first play of the next drive, Edwards ran to the left, broke three tackles, and cut across the middle for a 48-yard touchdown run to put the Trojans up 38-0. Overall, Edwards would rush for 318 yards on nine carries with five touchdowns.

“This was a big game for us. We hope to have more games like this as the season rolls on,” said Edwards. “We want to build on this. We aren’t done yet. Gotta give the credit for tonight to the defensive line for putting pressure on them and for the offensive line for opening up holes and block for us runners. If we keep playing like this and grinding it out, we’ll only get better.”

Truett would pick up a late second quarter interception on the next drive by the Warriors. The Trojans advanced slowly up the field, with Reese Jones scoring on an 8-yard run, starting the running clock. Jones would rush for 74 yards for second on the team behind Edwards and would also pick up the lone sack on defense. Dunk picked off another pass as the clock ended for halftime.

“I just went out there and tried to anticipate the plays, just like Coach told me to,” said Dunk. “It’s all fundamentals. I just sit back and wait to see what the quarterback is going to do. Our defensive line kept the pressure on the quarterback which allowed the linebackers and cornerbacks to make their plays.”

While the defense only had one sack, they did cause three turnovers. On most drop backs, the three man rush by the defensive line put the Warrior’s quarterback on the run, forcing him to make several off balanced passes and even catching him with a few intentional grounding penalties.

“I’m very pleased with the pass rush. That was a big point of emphasis for us in practice,” said Coach Crowder. “We put their quarterback under duress which makes our secondary look even better than it is because they were able to get interceptions or deflect passes away.”

When the fourth quarter began, Lawrence’s Austin Wynne caught a pass, shook off a tackle, and rumbled into the end zone for the first score of the season for the Warriors. The two point conversion failed, but for the first time in 5 games, the Warriors were on the board.

“It felt good to get some reps to get ready for next year,” said Jones. “As far as the team goes, we blocked well, we ran well. We hit the holes hard. Great game by us.”

“Our team blocked well and ran the ball well. That’s Bethel football,” said Coach Crowder. “We play physical up front on both sides of the ball and that is our key. If we want to stay on top of this conference, we need to keep improving on our defensive pressure, get stronger on secondary, and continue to do all of the small things that keep us winning.”
