CONCORD, N.C. – In a homecoming game played with a constant mist in the air Friday night, the Cannon Cougars defeated Northside Christian, 27-6, at Randy Marion Field.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cougars.
Cougars first-year coach Brad Hoover said the key to the victory was a unified effort from his players.
“The one thing I have preached is (playing as a) team, which they did,” Hoover said.
Junior Jordan Johnson handled the bulk of the groundwork for the Cougars, rushing for 176 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Cannon sophomore quarterback Mason McLaughlin helped the Cougar cause by completing six of his 12 pass attempts with a touchdown and interception.
“I was fired up” McLaughlin said.
On the first play of the second quarter, McLaughlin connected with freshman running back Patrick Carlson for a 50-yard touchdown pass, putting the Cougars ahead, 7-0.
On Northside Christian’s next possession, Cannon senior Sam Oddo intercepted the Knights’ Conor MeGee and returned it for a 55-yard touchdown.
Northside Christian got on the board on a 5-yard touchdown run by junior Tanner Tally, but Cannon blocked the kicking, making the score 14-6.
Leading 20-6 with 2 minutes, 47 seconds left in the game, Cannon’s defense stopped the Knights on their own 13-yard line on fourth down. The next play resulted in a 13-yard touchdown run by Johnson to cap the scoring.
