Charlotte Catholic defense smothers Charlotte Country Day offense in easy win

The 55th edition of the Cook Cup between the Charlotte Country Day Buccaneers and the Charlotte Catholic Cougars took place Friday night at Country Day.

Not playing since a 5-0 win at Charlotte Christian on August 28, a rested Catholic team had no trouble with the Buccaneers in posting a 42-0 win.

After starting the season with two road games, it was Country Day’s home opener but the Cougars had their way in posting their second consecutive shutout.

Cook Cup namesake, the late John Cook, who started the football program and coached at Country Day for 26 seasons, would have been impressed with the Cougars’ smothering defense.

The Cougars’ defense held the Buccaneers offense to minus-7 yards through three quarters and zero first downs, and 15 yards and just three first downs for the game. The Cougars built a 21-0 halftime lead.

Cougars senior running back Jaret Anderson ran for 129 yards on 18 carries in three quarters. He scored three rushing touchdowns and caught one for 42 yards from quarterback John Walton.

QUOTE: “I’ve been here for 11 years and I’ve never had back-to-back shutouts. The speed that our kids play with and the confidence that’s building, our coaches said that we didn’t see this coming tonight.” Catholic coach Mike Brodowicz.

WORTH MENTIONING: Catholic forced three Country Day turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble) while the Bucs’ defense had an interception and a fumble recovery.

▪ Country Day running back Nick Tennant led the Buccaneers in rushing with 23 yards on six carries.

Walton threw two touchdown passes for Catholic and went 4-of-6 for 76 yards.

RECORDS: Charlotte Catholic (2-0, 0-0), Charlotte Country Day (1-2, 0-0)

WHAT’S NEXT: The Cougars will host Rocky River Friday at home in Catholic’s home opener at 7:30 p.m. Country Day is back at home Friday hosting Grace Crossing at 7 p.m.
