HIGH POINT – High Point Christian Academy saw its hopes for an undefeated season dashed on Friday night.

Charlotte Christian posted a 62-0 victory in a battle of unbeatens at High Point Athletic Complex.

The Knights upped their record to 5-0. The Cougars fell to 5-1.

The defending 2017 NCISAA Division I state champions rolled into the game as the overall No. 1 team in North Carolina’s MaxPreps rankings and lived up to their hype.

“We got beat, we got beat soundly,” HPCA coach Scott Bell said. “We did not play our best game by any stretch. They are one heck of a football team and quite honestly they’re even better than I thought they were.”

The Knights got things rolling when quarterback Garrett Shrader rushed for a 36-yard touchdown on their first possession of the game. The senior, who is being recruited by Mississippi State, added two more rushing touchdowns and threw for another as the Knights cruised into halftime with a 49-0 lead.

The Knights registered their fourth shutout in five games on the season. They have allowed a total of seven points all year, while scoring 247.

For the Cougars, wide receiver Brycen Thomas had four receptions for 81 yards and the Cox brothers, Chase (nine) and Colby (six), combined for 15 tackles.

This marked the first time the Cougars were defeated at home since November 2014.

Up next for the Cougars is a conference matchup at Cannon Friday at 7 p.m. as they look to get back into the win column.

“We definitely want to go back to some of our basics,” Bell said about preparing for next week’s game at Cannon. “We’ve had good luck running the ball all season long so we’re definitely going to hone in on getting the ball out to our playmakers and let them make plays.”
