The opening game of the Charlottepreps.tv kickoff night was a dramatic one, as Myers Park’s defense stopped Charlotte Country Day in the final seconds to come away with a hard-fought 19-14 victory at Memorial Stadium.
Country Day led throughout the first half, getting a one-yard scoring run by Warren Holland and a 50-yard touchdown pass from Cole Bloomer to John Donohue. Myers Park cut the lead to 14-12 with four seconds left in the second quarter when Jack Davidson hit Jason Monastra on a 13-yard strike.
Myers Park took the lead on the opening drive of the third quarter as Davidson threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Adams for what turned out to be the game-winning score.
The teams traded punts until midway through the fourth when Country Day drove from their own 19 to the Myers Park 6 in 15 plays and faced second and goal with 40 seconds left. On the next two plays junior linebacker Ben Norris tackled running back Broadus Roberson for a five yard loss then sacked Bloomer for a nine yard loss. On fourth and goal from the 20, Bloomer’s attempted pass was intercepted by Monastra to seal the win.
Quote: “That’s probably a game last year that we don’t win,” Myers Park head coach Scott Chadwick said. “Last year we couldn’t make that play at the end and luckily tonight we made a couple. It wasn’t pretty but we’ll take it.”
Records: Myers Park is 1-0 while Country Day is 0-1
Worth mentioning: New Country Day head coach Drew Witman is the son of legendary Country Day coach Bob Witman and was the top assistant for Chadwick at Myers Park last year. “This was tough for both of us,” Chadwick said. “He’s the best assistant I’ve ever had and I’m really glad this is over so we can be friends again.”
Despite a size and depth disadvantage Country Day (who dressed only 33 players) held their own up front, holding Myers Park to just 46 yards rushing.
Myers Park’s Davidson threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, with 129 of those yards going to Adams. Holland led Country Day’s offense with 85 yards on the ground and a touchdown and Bloomer threw for 138 yards and a score.
What’s Next: Country Day will travel to Robbinsville on Friday, while Myers Park will play at Ardrey Kell also on Friday.
