Christ School beats Asheville School again
ASHEVILLE - Christ School never trailed in its annual game against rival Asheville School, thanks to junior quarterback Drew Johnson and a stingy defense.
Christ School held the Blues to just seven points through the first three quarters in a 48-20 win at Asheville School on Saturday.
The meeting was the 89th between the teams in a rivalry that is believed to be the oldest in the Carolinas.
The Greenies (8-2) have won five straight against Asheville School (3-6) and will hold onto the Fayssoux-Arbogast for another year.
“It’s a great game. To be a part of it is a huge honor and it’s a great showcase of our community. Our fans came out in full support, and I can’t be more proud to wear green,” Christ School coach Mark Maroz said.
This was Johnson’s first experience with the rivalry, but he said it’s one of the craziest games he has ever played in.
“Just to get that trophy, it means everything to win this game. We’re so excited,” Johnson said.
“The rivalry means a great deal to the schools. It’s a lot of fun, and the excitement it creates is great for both communities,” Blues coach Gus Schill said.
Kokayi Cobb (19 rushes for 105 yards and three touchdowns) started the scoring for the Greenies with a 25-yard touchdown run in the first minute, followed by a Johnson two-yard run to put Christ School up 14-0.
Johnson was effective in the passing game, with 16 completions in 22 attempts for 232 yards and one touchdown.
Asheville School was able to get on the board when sophomore receiver Ahmad Galimore was able to connect on 45-yard pass with Rashad Morrison with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter.
The Greenies scored the next 26 points to put the game out of reach.
“We’re a very young football team. If you look at our roster, we have the majority of our team coming back. I have never coached a team like this before,” Maroz said. “This whole season has been the ultimate team success. I’ve never been a part of anything like this. This is probably the best team I have ever coached as far as team dynamics go.”
Galimore finished the game with 163 yards receiving on seven catches and David Schill, senior quarterback, had 162 yards through the air on 11-for-22 passing and a touchdown for Asheville School.
