Johnson-led Greenies roll in rivalry game
ARDEN - Not many high school quarterbacks get to learn from a guy who played their position in the NFL.
Christ School’s Drew Johnson is making the most of that rare sort of opportunity.
Getting tips from Heath Shuler, who played for Washington and New Orleans, Johnson had a monster game Saturday while leading the Greenies to a 47-16 victory over arch rival Asheville School at Fayssoux Field.

“He is an incredible quarterback,” Shuler said of Johnson. “We probably put a lot more pressure on him, making decisions on the field and picking the right receiver out, much more difficult than most high schools. This is definitely a collegiate-type offense, so he’s ready to go play college football soon.”
Johnson threw five touchdown passes and completed 18 of 25 passes for an unofficial 264 yards.
“Coach Shuler’s great,” Johnson said. “He keeps me in the game. He keeps me straight. He does everything for me. He’s such a great coach. When I come to the sideline after I mess up, he’s always there to tell me to keep my head up.”
Christ School (8-1) won its seventh straight game and notched its fifth straight blowout win in the Carolinas’ oldest high school football rivalry.
Gabe Blevins caught two of Johnson’s touchdown passes while Aydan White, Keyvaun Cobb and Tyler Redmond caught the others.
Despite the lopsided final, Asheville School (5-3) made it interesting in the first half.
The Blues got on the board first when Rashad Morrison caught a 39-yard touchdown strike from Ahmad Galimore less than four minutes into the game.
Asheville School also drove inside the Greenies’ 20 three times in the first half but had to settle for field goal attempts, two of which were successful.
Meanwhile, Johnson threw three first-half touchdowns to help Christ School take a 21-13 lead into halftime.
“This is the best Asheville School I’ve seen since 2012,” said Christ School coach Mark Moroz. “They’re well-coached. They run the perfect system for the players they have. Coach (Gus) Schill does a great job coaching. As you could see, they hit us in the mouth in the first quarter and caught us off guard a little bit. But our players rebounded well, and that’s all I can ask of them.”
