Greenies at home for start to playoffs

Homefield advance is nice.

Especially when a football team utilizes it like Christ School – senior Drew Johnson (2,273 yards and 29 touchdowns with four interceptions) and the Greenies are 6-0 at Fayssoux Field this season.

Johnson became a 2,000-yard passer for the second consecutive year in Saturday’s 47-16 win over visiting Asheville School.

He and the team now turn their attention to the NCISAA Division II playoffs. There are three rounds and second-seeded Christ School (8-1) is guaranteed to have two of them at home if it can beat No. 7 SouthLake Christian (3-7) Friday in Arden.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

“To play in front of our home crowd, our students and our community is a big plus,” Greenies coach Mark Moroz said.

“Our guys definitely play better at home than on the road. The expectations are high around here. We’ve had scores go to a running clock five to six times this year. (Saturday) was the first time we had trailed in a game since August. It was good to see the guys respond to the adversity and our coaches made some great adjustments.”

When he drops back, Johnson has a wide array of options, including Keyvaun Cobb (52 receptions for 562 yards and eight touchdowns), Jared Letman-Gash (34 receptions for 482 yards and 13 touchdowns), Gabe Blevins (30 receptions for 439 yards and four touchdowns), Kokayi Cobb (21 receptions for 502 yards and one touchdowns), Tyler Redmond (19 receptions for 301 yards and four touchdowns) and Kevin Snyder (17 receptions for 146 yards).

Kokayi Cobb is the team’s top rusher with 437 yards and has run for seven touchdowns, one less than Sage Holley (187 yards, eight touchdowns).

Seth Griswold (92 tackles), Carson Jones (79), Holley (64) and Ross Oakley (52) carry the load for the defense.
