Cyclones drop high-scoring season opener

HOBGOOD — Despite a strong first quarter, the Community Christian School eight-player football team could not find a winning formula in its season opener Friday night, falling 50-30 in a visit to Hobgood Academy’s freshman team.
The Cyclones picked up 177 yards rushing in the loss, but did not complete a pass on six attempts and surrendered 441 yards of total offense to the Raiders.
In the opening frame, CCS jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead on a touchdown run and two-point conversion from Noah Pierce, safety via a tackle in the end zone by Evan Barnhill and a 57-yard scamper into the end zone by Joseph Flores, who led the Cyclones with 123 yards on 17 carries.
Hobgood scored 30 unanswered points into the second quarter, however, before the second of Pierce’s two rushing scores brought CCS back within 6 before halftime.
The Raiders outscored the Cyclones 20-6 in the second half to secure the commanding victory.
Community Christian will visit Northeast Academy on Friday, Sept. 2.
