Winstead, Conways lead CCS romp




KINSTON — Senior running back Avery Winstead rushed for three touchdowns and junior quarterback Chandler Conway passed for three more as the Community Christian School eight-player football team ended its slide at two games with a 46-14 season-ending triumph against host Bethel Christian on Friday night.

The Cyclones of head coach Andy Jackson finished 2-2 in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Colonial Carolina Conference and enter the playoffs next week with a 3-5 overall mark.

Bethel Christian wound up 1-3 in the conference and 1-7 overall.

Winsstead amassed 174 of Community Christian’s 220 rushing yards on 21 carries. His longest gain was 34 yards.

Conway connected on 7 of 8 passes for 111 yards and the three TDs.

All three TD tosses were to senior end Austin Conway. Austin Conway wound up with seven receptions for 99 yards. His longest grab was for 30 yards.

Senior Cameron Williams and junior Jordan Allen each scored a pair of two-point conversions, and senior Taige Bridgers added one.

Junior Tiquan Bunn keyed the CCS defensive effort with 15 solo tackles. Winstead registered eight tackles, followed by Allen, senior Dominique Evans and junior Gavin Wiley with seven each. Evans also had a fumble recovery.

Bethel Christian owned a 14-8 edge after one quarter. However, the Cyclones answered with 16 points in each of the second and third quarter and six in the last period wile blanking the Trojans the final three quarters.
