Cyclones win fourth straight with 66-32 rout of Lawrence
MERRY HILL — The Community Christian School eight-player football team rolled up 420 yards rushing and outscored host Lawrence Academy 36-12 in the second half to pull away for a 66-32 victory Thursday night.
After losing their first three games against 2-A opponents in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Colonial Carolina Conference, the Cyclones (4-3) have now won four in a row and have yet to taste defeat against a peer 1-A school.
Junior Avery Winstead led the way in the running game, rumbling for 243 yards on 21 carries and four TDs. Junior Emmanuel Lassiter added 103 yards on 11 carries with another TD.
CCS jumped out to a 22-0 lead after one quarter, but saw that margin dip to 30-20 at the half. However, in the third quarter, the Cyclones re-established control with a 24-6 spurt to take a commanding 54-26 entering the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Grant Webb, sophomore Barry Radford and junior Austin Conway added rushing scores for CCS. Webb completed all three of his passes for 58 yards.
Defensively, junior Dominique Evans and sophomore Jordan Allen each had interceptions. In forcing four Lawrence turnovers, Allen and Lassiter each had fumble recoveries. Lassiter returned a Lawrence fumble 40 yards.
Webb and Winstead each had 10 tackles on defense.
Lawrence remained winless through seven games.
CCS returns home next Thursday to face Hobgood Academy.
