Blinking was not encouraged during Friday’s 1-A/2-A Colonial Carolina Conference eight-player football game on the campus of Community Christian School.

If a spectator were to blink, a real possibility existed of missing a scoring play.

But on Homecoming night for the Cyclones, CCS took a 36-30 halftime lead before erupting for 42 points in the third quarter. Visting Wayne Christian responded with a 30-point spree in the fourth, but could get no closer than the final score in an epic 86-74 win for CCS.

In a game that easily eclipsed the most points ever scored by the Cyclones, CCS (2-3) trailed 24-8 in the first quarter before rallying to within 30-28 with 1:22 left before halftime. There, senior Avery Winstead picked off a Wayne Christian pass deep in Eagles territory. CCS turned it into points on the next play from scrimage, with Winstead connecting with junior Chandler Conway on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Junior Gavin Wiley banged in the two-point conversion to give CCS a halftime lead of 36-30. Wiley would add four more two-point conversions in the second half.

Out of halftime, Wayne Christian (0-5) attempted an onside kick, but sophomore Dylan Manning scooped it up and went 50 yards for a score. The visitors never crept closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Winstead finished with 161 yards rushing and a TD, while junior Tiquan Bunn accounted for two rushing TDs on just four carries. Bunn rushed for 83 yards and added a 40-yard scoring strike through the air.

Senior Austin Conway caught seven passes for 122 yards and hauled in four TDs.

On defense, Bunn led the way with 10 solo tackles. The Cyclones forced four turnovers, intercepting a pair of passses and recovering two fumbles. Junior Jordan Allen recorded the other CCS interception.

Wayne Christian, purveyor of 419 yards rushing, was led by Moe Brooks on the ground. Brooks had 256 yards on 20 carries and scored four TDs. CCS led 78-44 entering the final quarter before the Eagles mounted their furious rally.

After a bye week, CCS returns to the road Friday, Oct. 6 to face the combined team of Hobgood Academy and Lasker Northeast Academy at 7 p.m. The game will be played on Northeast’s campus.
