Cycs score 38 straight to drop defending state champ Bethel 46-14

From staff reports

The Community Christian School eight-player football team picked a fine time to come away with its first victory of 2017 on Friday night.

Trailing 14-8 after one quarter, the Cyclones erupted for 38 unanswered points to pull away from visiting Kinston Bethel Christian, handing the defending North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champions a 46-14 defeat.

Key for Community Christian (1-3) was a 15-tackle performance from junior Tiquan Bunn, playing the role of spy on the Trojans’ elusive quarterback.

After Bethel scored on its first two possessions, adjustments from CCS head coach Andy Jackson, which included Bunn as a spy, helped shut down the Trojans’ offensive presentation.

“We tackled better,” Jackson said of his team’s play after the first quarter. “We really did a lot better job of surrounding the ball.

Junior running back Avery Winstead ran for 174 yards on 21 carries, logging TD runs of 34, 25 and four yards.

Junior receiver Austin Conway hauled in three TD receptions, grabbing seven passes for 99 yards.

Conway pulled in a 15-yard scoring toss and added TD receptions of nine and six yards from brother and sophomore quarterback Chandler Conway.

Chandler Conway finished a perfect 8 for 8 for 99 yards.

Jackson wouldn’t go as far as to rank the win as the biggest in school history, but assured it was among the top.

“It’s up there,” Jackson said. “It’s a nice win. I thought when we beat Halifax (Academy) on Homecoming it was big, but these are the defending state champs.

The Cyclones welcome Wayne Christian for Homecoming activities next Friday.
