High school football in Charlotte was supposed to kick off Friday night.
We’ll have to wait a week now.
Friday’s game between Hickory Grove and Covenant Day has been canceled after a positive COVID-19 case was found in the Covenant Day community last weekend.
Covenant Day athletic director Sherry Kapelar said the school decided to quarantine its football team “as well as select others in our high school” until Oct. 2.
“Due to the privacy of our students and staff, we are not able to provide any identifying information,” Kapelar said in an email to the Observer.
New Hickory Grove coach Tad Baucom said his team was looking forward to finally playing a game. Now, his debut will wait a week. Hickory Grove will play High Point Christian at home Oct. 2. Covenant Day is scheduled to play at the Cabarrus Warriors on Oct. 2.
Baucom said breaking the news to his team was hard.
“I sat on it,” Baucom said, “and I finally told them, ‘Here’s the deal. I’m an eternal optimist and the good news is we get to heal up.’”
Baucom said his school has 28 players, up from 17 that started the season in 2019. The team has been holding workouts since July 6 and began official practice this month.
Instead of playing Friday, Hickory Grove will have a night scrimmage in uniform.
“We’re going to put on the jerseys and have fun,” Baucom said. “We’ve only been doing real football for five weeks, but they haven’t hit anybody different. I know they’re ready to.”
▪ One game is scheduled for the area Friday: North Raleigh Christian plays the Cabarrus Warriors at Cannon School at 6 p.m. Mecklenburg County’s big private schools — Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Latin, Charlotte Country Day and Providence Day — kick off the season Oct. 2. Public schools will begin in February.
