HCA runs all over Columbia, 54-6

The Harrells Christian Academy Crusaders didn’t let the fact that they have a new head coach, new system, young team and a small roster stop them Friday night as they dominated Columbia, 54-6.

“Overall, I think our performance was good. We still have some things to work on and clean up — same as any other team has to do — but overall we did good,” said HCA head coach Jason Arnette.

The HCA Crusaders were completely unstoppable in the running game as they never attempted a pass the entire night in their blowout victory. The defense was equally dominant, as the allowed just 6 points.

HCA had a host of ball carriers contributing to their running success. Rushing leaders for the Crusaders were Jack Laslo with 95 yards on three carries with a touchdown, Tyshon Newkirk with 67 yards on two carries with a touchdown and Shaquor Newkirk with 56 yards on three carries with two touchdowns.

Additionally, Mar’chris Jackson scored twice, and Shameek Darby and Cameron Tyler each scored had a touchdown apiece on the ground.

“We were not happy with our run blocking in our last scrimmage, so we practiced it hard all week and I think we got much better at it,” said Arnette.

The defense had an abundance of tackles and its share of takeaways as well. Defensive leaders for HCA were Tyler with seven tackles, three for loss; Darby with three tackles, one for loss; T. Newkirk with three tackles and a interception; Aaron Smith with two tackles and a interception; and Jackson with two tackles and a fumble recovery.

“The fist half of playing good defense is lining up correctly and knowing your assignment. I’m the defensive coordinator and I can’t think of a time the whole game where we weren’t lined up correctly, so our defense did a good job,” said Arnette.

The Crusaders are now 1-0 and they’ll look to maintain that momentum as they travel to Word of God Christian Academy on Friday.
