ASHEVILLE — Asheville School dropped its first game of the season Friday night, falling 28-27 to Hickory Grove Christian at home.

Hickory Christian (1-0) stretched its lead to 28-13 late in the third quarter behind a 15-yard touchdown run from senior running back Sean Dickey, who finished with a game-high 153 rushing yards on 23 carries.
Asheville School countered with 7.9 seconds left in the quarter, as quarterback Rayden Aphayvong connected with Luke Berry on a 41-yard touchdown pass. Aphayvong, who added 70 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, finished the night completing 13-of-23 passes for 180 yards and three touchdown passes, including a five-yard first quarter score to Anderson Screws.
But it was a missed extra point on the next play that went wide right and preserved the Lions' win in a game that was never meant to be played.
Hickory Grove was set to play High Point Christian Friday night before positive COVID-19 tests among students at High Point forced administration to cancel multiple games, including a matchup against Christ School next week.
Asheville School is off next week.
