HPCA continues quest for repeat

SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE

HIGH POINT — After capturing a North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association state title last season, the High Point Christian Academy Cougars set out with a very defined goal for the 2016 season.

Win the whole thing again.

HPCA remained on track to do that by winning 49-0 over North Raleigh Christian Academy in the NCISAA Division II quarterfinals last week.

The Cougars (8-1) stand two victories away from another state crown.

“We have had a target on our back all year long,” Cougars coach Scott Bell said following Friday night’s win. “All season long we have gotten ever y team’s’ best shot. We are now in a win or go home situation. We need to come together and play our best football.”

Top-seeded HPCA hosts four th-seeded Cannon School (6-5) tonight at 7 at the High Point Athletic Complex. The Cougars defeated 35-10 on October 14th at home.

HPCA played almost perfect football last Friday, forcing four turnovers in the romp past NRCA.

“We played really well tonight,” Bell said of the Cougars 49-0 win. “This was a complete and team game, our offense made plays that set up our defense, and our defense made plays that gave our offense good field position and they really fed off each other.”

A core group of upperclassmen spark the Cougars’ drive for a second straight state championship.

“We have been here before,” Bell said. “We were for tunate to finish the job last year and these guys know what is expected of them and what it takes to get to and win a championship. We have had the guys who were here last year show our new and younger players what you need to do in order to win. We have good chemistry. That’s going to be tremendous for us down the stretch.”
