HP Christian rally falls short
• By GREER SMITH ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
HIGH POINT — High Point Christian fell just short in trying to rally from a huge second half deficit and lost its season opener to Harrells Christian 52-42 Friday at the High Point Athletic Complex.
HPCA quarterback Myles Crisp threw four touchdowns passes, three to Sean O’Brien and one to Isaiah Sanders, as part of the comeback from a 44-7 deficit with 7:04 left in the third quarter.
Crisp finished with 261 yards passing and also raced 80 yards for a touchdown that put HPCA up 7-6 in the first quarter.
Darius Kane returned a kickoff 98 yards to start the rally and Crisp threw an 11-yard score to O’Brien to make it 44-21 with 2:37 to go in the third.
Harrells running back Devin Gardner raced 42 for the last of his five touchdowns to increase the lead to 52-21 late in the third. Crisp threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to O’Brien with 7:12 left to go and after HPCA recovered a pooch kick, tossed a 25-yard scoring strike with 7 minutes left.
The Cougars didn’t score again until they got the ball back with just under two minutes to go. Crisp threw a screen pass to Isaiah Sanders, who juked a defender and went 64 yards for a score and the point after made it 52-42. Sanders was called for taunting as he scored and was ejected, which also disqualified him from HPCA’s next game.
HPCA recovered the onside kick but the last hopes died when Crisp threw his second interception.
Gardner finished with 274 yards rushing. His other scoring runs were from 5, 20, 51 and 36 yards.
