HPCA batters Carolina Christian, 49-0

HIGH POINT – High Point Christian kept grinding away Friday night.
The Cougars overcame a bit of a slow start and pounded late-arriving Carolina Christian 49-0 at the High Point Athletic Complex.
The nonconference game started 20 minutes late because Carolina Christian was stuck in traffic coming from Rock Hill, South Carolina, and lasted nearly three hours – two hours consumed by a first half marred by penalties and incomplete passes.
Jaquan Jones scored three two touchdowns – two on pass receptions of 22 and 2 yards plus one on a 10-yard run that capped his 94 yards on the ground as HPCA improved to 7-2.
John Saunders also figured into three scores, throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brycen Thomas, scoring on a 1-yard run and throwing the 22-yard scoring strike to Jones. Saunders ran for 55 yards and threw for 84 before Cougar head coach Scott Bell put Luke Homol in at quarterback after HPCA went up 29-0 late in the second quarter.
Homol threw the 2-yard scoring strike to Jones just before the half, and directed two scoring drives in the second half which ended in a 5-yard touchdown run by Pedro Moreno and 10-yard run by Jones.
“We were sloppy at times,” Bell said. “That first half was hard to watch penalty-wise with all the bonehead mistakes, letting our emotions to get to us. But, we played hard on offense and defense. We did well against a big-sized group.
“I was pleased that we were able to run and throw the ball. Defensively, we did a good job for the most part. We lost containment some but we created some turnovers and got us a shutout.”
HPCA kept Carolina Christian from counting a scoring, stopping the Cavaliers for minus-92 yards rushing and allowing just 46 passing. The Cougars came up with two interceptions and recovered two Cavalier fumbles.
HPCA scored on its first drive to go up 6-0 and could have built a big margin early but came up with just a field goal after Carolina Christian failed on fourth-down gambles in its territory in the first quarter.
The Cougars took advantage of short fields after that and steadily built their margin.
