HPCA riding high into bye week

HIGH POINT — The High Point Christian Academy football program has come a long way in the last few years.

The Cougars took another step in cementing their status as an area power with their 35-6 victory over McMichael on Friday night. The Cougars dominated the Phoenix on both sides of the ball. Their defense held McMichael to six points and under 200 yards total offense.

HPCA quarterback Caleb Homol led the charge, throwing for 145 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 26 yards and one score.

“This win validates us,” HPCA head coach Scott Bell said. “There are plenty of players, kids, parents, other schools, media, and whoever else who are just not sure exactly how good we are. Coming out here and competing and defeating a school at the level of McMichael just shows that we can compete.”

HPCA’s Lance Boykin finished with four catches for 70 yards, nine rushes for 61 yards, and 103 return yards, including a 64-yard punt return. On the defensive end, Copeland Petitfils had 15 tackles and two sacks, and Peyton Fowler added six tackles.

“We have a very talented group again this year,” Bell said. “They’re smart, we have played clean and avoided penalties. We still have some things that we need to work on, but overall we have continued to improve in every game.”

With another big win checked off the list, the Cougars turn their attention to Charlotte Christian, a perennial state power currently ranked 10th in the North Carolina by MaxPreps.

Bell knows the challenge playing a team at their caliber, but remains optimistic that his team can pull the upset.

“We are heading into a game that not a lot of people are giving us a chance in,” Bell said. “We are excited to play them. Our team has never backed down. We have never backed down from a challenge, and we are going to strap it up in two weeks down in Charlotte. We are going to give it our all and see what happens.”

The Cougars have a bye week before heading on the road to battle the Knights on September 29.

“It’s not that big of an advantage,” Bell said. “I won’t have any film on them until next Saturday. We are going to have some seniors gone on their senior trip. We are playing really well right now, but we have stayed healthy, so it’s not like we are going to get anyone back from injuries.

“We are going to make the most of it and prepare for two weeks, but it’s not as big of an advantage as you’d think with everything going on.”

Tonight, Charlotte Christian will battle Ravenscroft, which fell 31-8 to HPCA on August 25th.
