KERNERSVILLE — A week after setting school recordswith 345 passing yards andfour touchdowns, Bishop McGuinness was unable to get its aerial attack toclick Friday night, resulting in a 28-7 loss to High Point Christian Academy in Kernersville.
Bishop McGuinness quarterback Peter Ingle was only able to complete 13 of his 25 pass attempts for 95 yards and one touchdown while throwing three costly interceptions. After the game, Coach Charlie Jones of the Villains was more impressed with the High Point ChristianAcademy defense than he was discouraged by his offense’s performance.
“The opponent was the only difference between this week and last,” Jonessaid. “They were the superior opponent, and there is nothing else you can say.”“I can go out and make six out of 10 three-pointers on the right day, but I can’t do that with Michael Jordan guarding me,” Jones said. “And that is exactly what happened tonight. Their team speed just overwhelmed us.”
Bishop McGuinness held tough throughout thefirst half, trailing only 7-0 late in the second quarter. However, a 45-yard interception return by High Point Christian Academy senior defensive back Mylick Elliott-Dargan set the Cougars up at the Villains’ 25-yard line with eight seconds remaining. One play later, as time expired in the first half,
High Point Christian Academy quarterback De’Shaun Taylor found a wide openTyeren Melton in the corner of the endzone for a 14-0 lead at halftime. Taylor finished the game with 133 total yards and two touchdowns. Bishop McGuinnessturnovers resulting in High Point Christian Academy points were a common theme throughout. The Villains turned the ball over five times, leaving the defense in unfavorable positions. All four of the Cougars’ scores came when the drive started in Bishop McGuinness territory, with their longest scoring drive of the night spanning only 48 yards.
“I can’t remember all the math, but it seemedlike every single one oftheir touchdowns came as a result of them starting right on top of us,” Jones said. “When we had them behind the 50, we actually contained them pretty well.”
Bishop McGuinness finally got on the scoreboard when Ingle connected withwide receiver Zach Fowler for a 15 yard touchdown with 3:31 remaining in the game.
“Now my job as a coach is to make sure Monday afternoon, when we comeout here to practice, our guys bring the same attitude and effort that we had tonight,” Jones said. “We now have an understanding for how fast we are going to have to play against superior opponents and now we have to transfer that into our everyday effort.”
