HPCA cruises past SouthLake
HIGH POINT – High Point Christian couldn’t wait to get going.
The Cougars scored on all five of their first-half possessions – plus once on special teams – and raced past SouthLake Christian 54-7 in NCISAA football Friday at the High Point Athletic Complex.
“We played really well,” HPCA coach Scott Bell said. “They came out focused after about a three-week period where we’ve built momentum, and I think we’re peaking at the right time.
“We were playing a team that’s going through a rebuilding process. But, all in all, I think we played really well up front. Our line played well, and the guys who came in who don’t get a lot of playing time also played well.”
Nathan Woelfel ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns, plus caught a touchdown pass, for the Cougars (6-1). Tyeren Melton also had 77 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while Lance Boykin ran for 75 yards.
De’Shaun Taylor also had two rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown for HPCA, which scored the first 42 points of the game, while the defense forced five turnovers and special teams scored off a blocked punt.
“Our line killed it,” said Woelfel, a junior running back. “They came out, and I don’t think anyone was even touched on the first three or four plays. That’s all the linemen right there.
“It was good, because we’ve been getting going kind of late. We’ve been winning, but it’s taken us a quarter to get into it. So, (scoring early) got the intensity up quick, which was nice.”
Boykin, Malik Greene and Mylick Elliott-Dargan each had an interception, while Timmy Fischvogt and Chance Clency each had a fumble recovery. Clency also had a blocked punt that Austin Hendley ran in for a touchdown.
In the first quarter, after the Eagles (2-4) fumbled, the Cougars scored on their first play – a 29-yard touchdown run by Woelfel. Then, Melton broke a 63-yard touchdown on the next drive, and, following a long punt return by Malik Greene, Woelfel scored a 1-yard touchdown to lead 21-0 after one quarter.
