Homol sparks HPCA past McMichael

SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian Academy football made history on Friday night.

For the first time ever, the Cougars defeated a public school opponent. HPCA cruised past McMichael 35-6 at High Point Athletic Complex.

“This win validates us,” HPCA head coach Scott Bell said. “There are plenty of players, kids, parents, other schools, media, and whoever else who are just not sure exactly how good we are. Coming out here and competing and defeating a school at the level of McMichael just shows that we can compete.”

The Phoenix (1-3) came within eight points of the Cougars (5-0) at the beginning of the second half, scoring on a four-yard run by Drake Hill. The subsequent two-point conversion attempt was no good, setting the score at 14-6.

“We wanted to come out and be a little more balanced,” Bell said. “We had a good night throwing the football and actually established the run game. The defense played hard against a team that likes to run the ball on the interior a lot. We played well. We still have a lot of things to clean up, especially with a tough opponent coming up in two weeks.”

The Cougars took the lead late in the first quarter after a kick return set them up on McMichael’s 31. Caleb Homol fired a 6-yard pass to wide receiver Ryan Caldwell for the opening score. HPCA tacked on one more score before the half as Homol found Lance Boykin for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

In the third quarter, following the McMichael touchdown, the Cougars responded with a drive capped by an electrifying 21-yard touchdown run by Homol.

Homol also threw a 12 yard touchdown pass to Caldwell and a 21-yard TD pass to LaBrent Crews.

“He is a great runner,” Bell said of Homol. “I don’t let him run a lot because we are not very deep at quarterback, but I know he has the capability of running. I was really pleased with what he did in the passing game. Our completion percentage hasn’t been that good in the last couple of games so we worked hard on prioritizing which routes we wanted to look for first.”

Homol completed 14 of 17 passes for 144 yards and three TDs and rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown. Lance Boykin added 64 yards on the ground, and also grabbed an interception on the defensive side of the football. Boykin finished with 70 receiving yards and 103 return yards.

Chance Clency rushed seven times for 80 yards for HPCA, while Copeland Petitfils recorded 15 tackles and went 5 for 5 on PATs. Peyton Fowler had eight tackles and Chase Cox seven for HPCA.

The Cougars enjoy a bye week before traveling to battle Charlotte Christian, a team ranked as one of the top 15 schools in North Carolina, on Sept. 29.

Bell welcomes the challenge of playing a marquee opponent.

“We are excited to play them,” Bell said. “Our team never backs down, they never back down from a challenge, we are going to strap it up two weeks from tonight down in Charlotte and see what happens.”
