HIGH POINT — After two solid wins to start the 2017 campaign, the High Point Christian Academy Cougars played their most complete game of the season in a 48-0 rout of Harrells Christian at High Point Athletic Complex on Monday night.
The Cougars (3-0) led 15-0 at halftime and lit up the scoreboard in the second half.
“We cleaned up the penalties and turnovers from the first few weeks,” HPCA head coach Scott Bell said. “We have improved significantly over where we were the first two weeks, but we still have a little bit of work to do.”
The teams were locked in a tight defensive struggle to begin the game. The Cougars broke through on their final drive of the first quarter, marching 44 yards on 7 plays to set up a 24-yard field goal by Copeland Petitfils for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars added a pair of touchdowns that came within two minutes of each other to grab a 15-0 lead going into the half.
On defense, the Cougars stifled the Crusaders (2-1) potent triple-option running attack, holding Harrells to only 78 yards on 33 attempts for the game.
“Our defense was not created to stop teams that have run-heavy offenses like we faced tonight,” Bell said. “Our team stepped up and played hard-nosed tackle football. We have a lot of guys who are hybrid-type guys who can play multiple positions on the field, and those are the guys who have stepped up big time and made tackles. It’s a blue-collar group on defense, and it showed again tonight.”
On offense, the Cougars were led by senior Caleb Homol, who completed 7 of 15passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns and rushed seven times for 52 yards and a score.
The Cougars struck on their first possession of the second half after a blocked punt by Chase Cox set them up on the Crusaders’ 7. Homol found Lance Boykin for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Then HPCA’s Ty Ragsdale made a spectacular one-handed catch down the right sideline to reel in a 29-yard touchdown throwfrom Homol.
“We have been taking it week by week,” Bell said. “We have been playing well on both sides of the ball, but we have some really tough games coming up and we are playing some programs with winning mindsets, so we are just trying to stay focused and take it one week at a time.”
Offensive linemen Theron Ellington and Jared Torrence added a rushing touchdown apiece in the final six minutes of the game to close out an impressive victory for the Cougars. Petitfils recorded 16 tackles for HPCA, while R.J. Evans had eight tackles and Cox had seven tackles, a fumble recovery and the blocked punt.
It will be a short week for HPCA as it hosts Concord First Assembly on Friday at 7 p.m.
“This is going to be a tough week,” Bell said. “We played tonight, and we will be outhere again mixing itup with First Assembly, so it’s going to be tough. Last week was a little distracting with having to delay the game and having to spend a couple days practicing inside, but we are going to do the best we can to push through everything.”
