Orean's versatile performance ignites Eagles in opener

By HENRY HUTTON hhutton@independenttribune.com

CONCORD, N.C. – cfa Academy opened its 2016 season with a thrilling 36-34 home victory over highly regarded Metrolina Christian.

After the Warriors (0-1) scored a go-ahead touchdown with approximately 1:30 left in the game, the Eagles (1-0) did not give up. After a strong return out to its 40-yard line, cfa quickly moved down the field and scored the game winner – a fade pass from Josh Orean to Justin Felder -- in the corner of the end zone – with about 40 seconds left.

The defense kept Metrolina from scoring to secure the win.

“This was the seniors’ first opener that they won” cfa coach Craig Kean.

Orean – who played quarterback, receiver and defensive back – had a strong performance.

While Orean shone at quarterback, the strong play of fellow passer Seth Sturdivant allowed Orean to be a versatile piece of the offense at wide receiver.

Kean was very excited about his depth and options at quarterback, saying, “With Seth and Josh out there with Julius (Felder) and Dwayne (Crawford), you can’t stop all of them.”

While they may have given up 34 points, the cfa defense was solid and made stops when necessary against Metrolina’s no-huddle spread offense.

Kean also raved about his kicker, Tre Boyd, who hit a 37-yard field goal late in the game.

The Eagles are 1-0 for the first time in a long time and Kean will have a week to shore uo mistakes before cfa Academy takes on fellow Cabarrus private school Cannon at home next Friday.
