QB Jack Davidson’s 3 TD passes, stingy defense spark Myers Park in opener against Country Day

Myers Park High’s football team has gotten incrementally better in each of coach Scott Chadwick’s first two seasons.
But the Mustangs appear poised to make a big leap forward this season, rolling past Charlotte Country Day 34-7 Saturday night in the Charlotte Kickoff Night game at Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Jack Davidson threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns for Myers Park, which used a 24-point second quarter to put some distance on the Buccaneers to win its third straight season opener.
Davidson, a Division I college prospect who led the Southwestern 4A in passing last season with more than 2,200 yards, completed 13 of 24 attempts against Country Day.
That included touchdown passes of 4 and 31 yards to Elijah Bowick in the second quarter, and a 24-yard touchdown to Joshua Curry in the third quarter.
Aaron Jordan added 127 rushing yards and a touchdown, a 4-yard run to kick off the Mustangs’ second-quarter scoring run.
Kicker Tyler Dameron connected on two field goals – a 31-yarder in the first quarter for Myers Park’s first score, and a 43-yarder to end the first half for a 27-0 Mustangs lead.
Country Day, which finished 3-7 in Drew Witman’s first year as coach in 2015, finally broke the shutout midway through the third quarter on Deangelo Epps’ 14-yard touchdown pass from Wes Bingham.
Records: Myers Park 1-0, Charlotte Country Day 0-1.
Worth mentioning: Bingham had 158 yards total offense for the Buccaneers, running for 39 yards and throwing for 119. He completed 11 of 28 passes. … Jacquez Robinson added 86 rushing yards for the Mustangs. … Bowick finished with four receptions for 77 yards and the two scores, while teammate Emanuel Alston had two catches for 73 yards. That included a 71-yard catch that set up Dameron’s first field goal. … Myers Park finished with 439 yards total offense (219 rushing, 220 passing) and Country Day had 170 yards (51 rushing, 119 passing). … One down side for the Mustangs was penalties: 11 for 105 yards in all, including three straight personal foul and unsportsmanlike penalty calls late in the fourth quarter that had Chadwick yelling at the officials.
What’s next: Both teams have home games Friday night: Country Day hosts Robbinsville and Myers Park is home against Ardrey Kell.
