Bethel Christian Academy got a big moral victory against the defending NCISAA 1A State Champions Northeast Academy, despite a 54-40 loss Friday night.

The Trojans (2-3, 1-1) fell behind 48-20 at halftime. But BCA rallied back and came within a score. In fact, Bethel Christian threw a pass close to the end zone that was almost caught, but instead was intercepted with two minutes left in the game. 30 seconds later the Eagles (5-0, 3-0) scored their first points of the second half to put the game out of reach.

“I was really proud of our football team,” Bethel Christian head coach Brick Crowder said. “Really proud of the way our guys fought tonight. Battling back from 28 points down to have a chance to tie it with two minutes to go in the game. Proud of the heart of our team, especially as young as we are.”

The Trojans boast just one senior and a team full of freshman and sophomores. While the Trojans couldn’t pull the upset, Crowder feels like this type of moral win is good for the team.

“It says to them they played the defending state champions to within 40 yards of being tied up and going into overtime,” Crowder said. “There’s a lot we can hang our hats on tonight. We didn’t play perfect, we got a ton of mistakes that we can clean up. But as far as heart goes, that’s something we can build on.”

The Trojans will now be preparing to face Community Christian (1-5, 1-4), a team they beat 76-18 just a few weeks ago. Crowder said that game is big for the Trojans.

“If we win that game, it will secure our spot in the state playoffs which is what we want to do and that means a lot to our football program,” Crowder said. “We want to go ahead and get that done. That’s our message to the guys right now. We got to stay focused.”
