APA hands Rocky Mount Faith Christian first loss, celebrates Homecoming
Story by Keith Spence
With an undefeated team coming to Hodges Field amidst the distractions of Homecoming week, Parrott Academy football coach Matt Beaman had plenty of reasons to be worried about his team’s game against Rocky Mount Faith Christian.
Okay, maybe not.
APA exploded for 30 second quarter points, rushed for 423 yards, and was barely threatened in a 64-41 rout of visiting Faith Friday night.
“There were definitely some concerns heading into this game,” Beaman said. “Faith is talented and well-coached, but we were up to the task. I couldn’t be prouder of this team for the way we handled our business.”
Parrott (5-1) ran the ball virtually at will, especially in the first half on the legs of workhorse Ashton Brinson. The 198-pound senior dissected the Faith defense for 222 yards and four touchdowns, all before Holland Killinger was crowned Homecoming queen at halftime.
“We always want to be the most physical team on the field and tonight we were,” Beaman said. “Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, and our backs ran the ball hard. We’re a very good team when we’re able to run the ball like we did tonight.”
Brinson’s first-half TD runs covered 42, 69, 37, and 26 yards. He also accounted for three two-point conversions as APA built an insurmountable 46-12 advantage at intermission.
Brinson left the game with back spasms late in the half and didn’t return.
“He was available in the second half had we needed him,” Beaman said. “With the big lead, we were fortunately able to get him some rest.”
Brinson’s understudy Aaron Jones picked up where the starter left off and rushed for 117 yards and a pair of TD’s in relief.
QB Caleb Sanderson ran for a score and threw for another to Andrew Daniels, while senior lineman Nick Fells achieved some big-man magic with a one-yard TD plunge in the fourth quarter.
“We were able to spread the ball around and get a lot of different players in the game,” Beaman said. “Now, with a bye week coming up, we can get everyone healthy for the stretch run.”
APA will travel to Wayne Christian in two weeks. The Eagles are currently 3-1 and will visit Rocky Mount Academy next week before hosting Parrott.
