Parrott-Wayne Christian game reaches halftime
By Justin Hayes GOLDSBORO NEWS ARGUS

Volume scoring versus mother nature.

A volatile mixture of both ruled the highly-anticipated gridiron clash last evening between varsity startup Wayne Christian and defending eight-man 2-A state champion Arendell-Parrott Academy.

With the Patriots holding a slim 22-20 halftime lead, play was officially suspended. No formal makeup has been announced.

After a lethargic opening series, Parrott turned a Wayne Christian fumble into six points courtesy of quarterback Connor Bright, who found junior Zach Sylvia for a 30-yard scoring strike.

When Trey McLawhorn's 2-point conversion failed, the Patriots led 6-0.

Wayne Christian, however, did not flinch.

Austin Kornegay took the ensuing kickoff -- a low, end-over-end bullet -- to the edge and beyond, marching 70 yards to paydirt and sending the crowd into delirium.

Shortly thereafter, the deluge arrived.

What began with spotty heat lightning gradually gave way to a fully formed white-out, making ball security an issue and slowing the offensive pace for both teams.

Parrott did manage two more scoring drives -- a 1-yard plunge by McLawhorn and a Bright pass to Cole Daniels -- but could never match the efficiency it displayed prior to the downpour.

Wayne Christian was buoyed all evening by the play of quarterback DJ Waters, who rushed for 84 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.

The Eagles also received production from speedster Jamari Waters, who caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Waters as the first quarter came to a close.

At the break, fans and volunteers sought the safety of their vehicles. With no relief in sight, officials called the affair at approximately 8:45 p.m.
