APA remains undefeated, rolls past St. David's
Story by Keith Spence
For one year at least, the highly competitive rivalry between Arendell Parrott Academy and St. David’s High School was a colossal mismatch.
The two teams had split their past 10 meetings, but on Friday night, APA resembled an NFL team by comparison, demolishing the Warriors 50-8 in a game that featured a running clock by the 10:41 mark of the second quarter.
“They’re down a bit this year and they have some injuries, so we just did what we needed to do,” Parrott coach Matt Beaman said. “We got a big lead early and were able to play a lot of kids. That experience will only help us down the road.”
How complete was the Patriots’ domination?
In the first quarter, APA ran seven offensive plays and scored on five of them.
Morgan McPhaul started the onslaught with a 48-yard scoring scamper on the game’s 3rd play.
He later tallied on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Cole Dawson, who also connected with Paxton Riley for TD passes of 58 and 50 yards.
Cole Howard completed the 5-TD first period with a 34-yard scoring run.
Parrott’s last four scoring drives were just one play each.
The second quarter was even stranger.
APA didn’t run a single offensive play in the frame, yet still outscored the Warriors by seven.
With 10:41 left in the period, St. David’s punted, and APA’s Michael Outlaw returned the kick 52 yards to paydirt, steamrolling several Warriors’ defenders in the process, commencing the running clock.
The Warriors then ran 14 consecutive plays and kept the ball for the entire remainder of the half before being stopped at the Patriot 9-yard line.
After a scoreless third quarter, the fun really materialized in the final stanza. With 6:40 to play, APA senior nose guard Thomas Newhall lined up at fullback on offense and took a handoff 77 yards to the house, demonstrating impressive speed and agility on the run.
“Thomas is a senior, one of our hardest workers, and seeing him get a touchdown was just fantastic,” Beaman said.
Grayson Chesson ran 54 yards for a touchdown on the game’s final play, costing the Patriot defense a shutout.
No APA starter saw any action in the second half.
“The kid (Chesson) made a nice run, but overall, our backup defense played really well,” Beaman said. “It can be tough to stay focused in a game like this; the guys who got to play more than usual once the running clock started made the most of it. It was great to see.”
