Notes: Mitchell used its bruising offensive line of Hudson Boone, Jesse Presley, Zack Richardson, Garrett Buchanan, Josh Stamey and Trevor Self, to pace the Mountaineers to a 21-point first half and a 21-14 win over Erwin. Senior quarterback Ben Young, responsible for 8,548 yards in his high school career, added 100 passing yards in the Week 1 win while rushing the ball 12 times for 61 yards. Sophomore Noah Pittman added 102 rushing yards and a touchdown while senior Brody Smith hauled in four receptions for 66 yards. Leading the defense against Cannon will be senior Preston Roe (four tackles), Self (four tackles), Pittman (three tackles) and Matthew Gilbert (three tackles, one fumble recovery). Cannon, a private school, will be led by quarterback Chris Nelson (8-of-15 for 128 yards) and Gabe Ortiz, who rushed for 131 yards and two scores in their Week 1 win. Nick Whitley (seven tackles) will lead a strong Cougar defense that gave up seven points in their season-opening win.
