GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE: Statesville Christian at Christ the King
WHEN: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS: Statesville Christian 5-0, 0-0 Piedmont Conference; Christ the King 1-4, 0-1 PC
COACHES: Statesville Christian’s Angelo Cox is in his third season (19-10); Chris the King’s Jay Alverson is in his second season (1-13)
LAST MEETING: In 2016, in the first game in Christ the King history, Statesville Christian won, 72-0.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Statesville Christian: quarterback Brennan Settle, running back Jamie Turner, receiver Deshon Holmes, linebacker Cole Cameli; Chris the King: receiver/safetySeth Frederick, quarterback Jack Hills, running back Brandon Jones, nose guard A.J. McMahon, center Bradley Loftin
THE MATCHUP: We have to be honest: This probably won’t be pretty. The Crusaders are taking on a legitimate juggernaut, and their thin roster, which will be even thinner because of injuries, certainly won’t help matters. Statesville Christian was built to annihilate and dominate. The team’s only been around since 2015 but already has a state title to its credit. Right now, it’s effectively a way station for many of tomorrow’s college football standouts. The focus for the Crusaders should be to avoid further injury to key players and pick up a few moral victories along the way.
