Providence Day drubs High Point Christian in semifinal

The Providence Day Chargers offense’ clicked on all cylinders Friday night in a 48-14 victory over the High Point Christian Cougars in an NCISAA Division I state semifinal playoff game.
The win gives the host Chargers a spot in the NCISAA Division I championship game next Friday night at Charlotte Christian. The Knights were 49-12 winners over Christ School in the other semifinal.
Providence Day scored early and often in getting off to a 31-0 lead before High Point Christian scored a late second-quarter touchdown to make it 31-7 at halftime.
Providence Day sophomore quarterback Cody Cater completed 25 of 36 passes for 305 yards and four touchdown passes. Cater spread the wealth around with four Chargers players grabbing touchdown passes, including Porter Rooks (12 yards), Nick Highum (18 yards), Nickel Fields (13 yards) and Will Filiault (27 yards).
Providence Day’s Osita Ekwonu had two rushing touchdowns of 12 yards and 1 yard for the Chargers. Fields also ran for 80 yards on eight carries.
Records: High Point Christian is 9-2; Providence Day is 9-2.
Three who mattered
Cater: Chargers’ quarterback threw four touchdown passes while directing the offense for 483 total yards.
Highum: Caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Cater, pulled in six catches for 78 yards and had an interception on defense.
Lance Boykin: The Cougars’ senior wide receiver and cornerback accounted for both High Point Christian touchdowns with TD catches of 57 and 31 yards.
Observations
▪ Providence Day forced three High Point Christian turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble) while having no miscues of its own.
▪ Providence Day running back Nickel Fields is the younger brother of former Chargers’ and current Duke cornerback, Bryan Fields.
Worth mentioning
▪ The Chargers scored on their first five offensive possessions of the first half, garnering 31 points.
