Providence Day all-state defensive lineman Elijiah Brown said he knew he wanted to commit to Duke to play college football two weeks ago, but he just wanted to wait a little longer, just to be sure.

Brown, a 6-foot-4, 286-pound senior, visited Duke’s campus for Saturday’s home game with Northwestern. Duke won 41-17, and Brown committed before he left.

“I just felt comfortable there,” Brown said of Duke. “It felt like a real family there with the football program. I decided a couple weeks ago, and I wanted to wait to announce until (Saturday). I wanted to be sure because I had to talk it over with (Providence Day) coach (Adam) Hastings, and my other coaches, and make sure everything was good to go.”

Brown said he chose Duke over Wake Forest and N.C. State. In Durham, Brown said Duke coaches told him he could play in multiple spots along the defensive front.

“Right now,” he said, “they said I can be a three-technique, where they can move me inside or outside. And I’ve been playing that way all of my high school career. Going into college, they’ll put weight on me. I’ll get stronger and I’ll be able to do battle with the big boys inside.”

At Providence Day this season, Brown has 26 tackles and a sack for the Chargers (3-1), who beat Carolina Pride last week.

“Now that I’ve got my commitment out of the way, I’ll focus on this season at Providence Day and go for a ring,” Brown said.
