Cabarrus connection helps Providence Day blast Cannon by 67 points
CONCORD – The Providence Day football team’s offense overwhelmed Cannon early on, and then the Charger defense – highlighted by a pair of massive Cabarrus County products – made certain there was never a threat of a comeback, as the Cougars fell, 67-0, Friday night at Randy Marion Field.
Junior defensive end Kedrick Bingley-Jones, who previously played at A.L. Brown, accounted for a pair of safeties for Providence Day. On the other end of the Chargers’ defensive line, Kannapolis native Jacolbe Cowan wreaked havoc with constant pressure and numerous hits on Cannon quarterbacks Larken Lancaster and AJ Arledge.
The powerful play of Bingley-Jones (6 foot 4, 245 pounds) and Cowan (6-5, 265) led to a night in which the Cougars crossed the 50-yard line just once – on their final series of the night, when Providence Day led by 11 touchdowns.
The 67 points were the most the Cougars have allowed since losing to Harrell’s Christian, 75-7, in 2013. That game also was the last time Cannon was defeated by such a wide margin.
“PD is a very good football team, and we’re not,” Cannon coach Brad Hoover said. “We have spurts, but unfortunately we’re not playing together as a team – we really haven’t all year. It’s kind of frustrating, especially with as many seniors as we have.”
The Chargers jumped out to a 37-0 lead in the first quarter. At one point during that stretch, they had four consecutive scoring drives that lasted just two plays.
“At the end of the day,” Hoover said, “we keep trying to chop wood. Sometimes it’s not as big a piece of wood as we’d like to have. It’s frustrating on a lot of parts, but I know our kids don’t give up; I need better effort from them. I constantly challenge them, but that’s what really my challenge is going into next week as we enter conference play.”
RECORDS
Providence Day is 2-3 overall and 0-0 in NCISAA Big South 3A Conference, while Cannon is 1-4, 0-0 Piedmont 2A/3A. It was Cannon’s fourth consecutive loss. The Chargers, meanwhile, won their second straight game.
“We scheduled really difficult games the first three games of the year, and we had some injuries early, but we got better every week,” Providence Day coach Adam Hastings said. “We kind of felt some things were coming together for us.”
THE PLAY OF THE GAME
With a little more than a minute left in the second quarter, the Cougars had the ball, hoping to keep the score 51-0 at halftime. Bingley-Jones, a University of Florida commit, made sure that didn’t happen.
On second down, he tore through the offensive line from the right side and slammed Cannon running back to the ground in the end zone for a safety to push the Chargers’ lead to 53-0.
On the ensuing free kick, Providence Day’s Porter Rooks fielded the ball on his own 34 and raced 66 yards for a touchdown with 11.1 seconds left, making it 60-0 at the break.
PRIMETIME PERFORMERS
Providence Day
-- Junior quarterback Cody Cater completed 12 of 16 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns – all in the first half.
-- Rooks caught four passes for 65 yards and two TDs while also returning a free kick 66 yards for a score.
-- Bingley-Jones was a terror, blocking a punt for a safety, tackling a runner for a safety and catching an 8-yard pass.
Cannon
-- Lancaster netted 39 yards rushing, and he fought for each one of them, because he and fellow Cougar signal-caller AJ Arledge were constantly under pressure. Lancaster ran for two of the Cougars’ five first downs.

-- Immediately after the game, before coaches spoke, Cannon senior Timmy Jones stood in the end zone before his kneeled teammates and spoke passionately about fighting throughout the rest of the season.
-- Former Concord High School star quarterback/defensive back is an assistant coach with the Chargers.
