Providence Day routs Charlotte Latin in the teams’ regular-season finale BY TIM DONELLI

The Providence Day Chargers won their third straight pivotal game Friday with a convincing 42-7 win over the Charlotte Latin Hawks at home. The win allowed Providence Day to claim the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCISAA 4A football playoffs.

Three consecutive wins over Charlotte Christian, Rabun Gap and Charlotte Latin to close the regular season allowed the Chargers to earn a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Providence Day will play next on Friday, November 12 against an opponent yet to be determined.

What was expected to be a close game turned out to be anything but. Providence Day jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter advantage and led 21-0 at halftime. Providence Day received the opening second-half kickoff, and on its’ first play from scrimmage running back Chris Peal rumbled 86 yards for a touchdown to put the Chargers up 28-7. Chargers’ quarterback Grant Logan threw four touchdown passes for the game of 27, 23, 40 and 8 yards respectively while also running for a 17-yard score.

Providence Day sophomore wide receiver Channing Goodwin had two touchdown catches, while Makai Bleu Coleman and Jordan Shipp each had single TD grabs for the Chargers.

“We’re on the right path,” said Providence Day coach Chad Grier when discussing having to win three straight must-win games in its final three contests to capture the No. 1 seed. “We’re doing things the right way, the hard work works and has taken hold, and the kids are starting to realize the result of it and are gaining confidence.”

An interesting twist in the game came in the third quarter when Latin had appeared to score its second touchdown on consecutive, second-half drives to cut the Providence Day lead to 28-14. But a penalty took the points off the board. On the next play the Chargers’ Connor Glosson snagged an interception to halt the Hawks’ drive, and Latin never recovered.

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Grant Logan – Providence Day: Chargers’ quarterback went 11-of-13 passing for 219 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 113 yards on 15 carries and one TD.

Keyaan Abdul-Rahim – Providence Day: Chargers’ linebacker led all players in tackles and was all over the field in helping to hold a high-powered Latin offense to just seven points.

Connor Glosson – Providence Day: Chargers’ defensive end had three sacks including back-to-back sacks on a first-quarter Latin drive, and also had an interception.

WORTH MENTIONING Friday’s game was “Senior Night” at Providence Day as 13 Chargers’ players were honored before the game…The Chargers’ Nick Abraham recovered a short kickoff following his team’s first touchdown, beating Latin players to the ball. The recovery led to Providence Day’s second touchdown…Latin had two interceptions on defense.

THEY SAID IT “We come to work every week, it’s really not a dream. This is what we’re supposed to do. Coach Grier) put in a plan when he first came here two years ago. We’re starting to get better at the plan.” Providence Day quarterback Grant Logan when asked after the game if he could have dreamed that Friday night’s game against the Hawks could have gone any better for the Chargers. RECORDS Charlotte Latin (8-2, 3-2), Providence Day (6-3, 4-1)

WHAT’S NEXT Latin will have a playoff game next Friday against a team and site yet to be determined, while Providence Day will have a bye next Friday and host a playoff game on Friday, November 12.
