Providence Day wins 5th straight in 14-8 defeat of Country Day
The Providence Day Chargers reeled off their fifth straight win Friday night with a 14-8 victory over the Country Day Buccaneers at Country Day.
Chargers running back Gabe Montgomery ran for 149 yards on 20 carries and scored both Providence Day touchdowns on runs of eight and 33 yards.
The Chargers defense was stifling, holding Country to just eight total points and 115 second-half yards. Providence Day safety Elliot Beiser also had two interceptions including one late in the fourth quarter, which halted the Buccaneers final drive.
“We knew that to come in and to be successful it was going to be a battle,” said Providence Day coach Adam Hastings. “I was so proud of our guys the way they fought and played.”
For Country Day, it was a second straight week of coming up just short against a quality team. After losing the lead in the final minute last week at Charlotte Christian, the Bucs came up six points short Friday on “Senior Night.” Senior running back Warren Holland paced the Bucs offense with 137 yards on 18 carries.
After a scoreless first half, the Chargers recovered a fumbled punt at the Country Day 42-yard line. Seven plays later, Montgomery scored from eight yards out to give Providence Day a 7-0 lead. Montgomery’s 33-yard scamper capped off an eight-play, 81-yard drive early in the third quarter gave the Chargers a 14-0 advantage.
The Buccaneers offense finally woke up midway through the fourth quarter when running back Nick Tennant, who ran the ball three consecutive times, scored from five yards out on the third carry.
A successful two-point conversion catch by Austin Anderson cut the Providence lead to six points.
The win for Providence Day sets up a big showdown next Friday at Charlotte Christian, with the winner claiming the CISAA conference championship.
Chargers quarterback John Schweitzer previewed the matchup. “We’re both good teams, Christians a good team,” he said. “We’re just going to have to come out; and focus on us playing our football, and where we’re going to do well.”
