CCS skid continues at Pungo

BELHAVEN — The skid for the Community Christian School eight-player football team reached three games with a 64-24 loss at Pungo Christian Academy on Friday night.

The Cyclones of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Coastal Independents Conference tumbled to 1-3 with their second loss to Pungo.

CCS fell behind 24-6 in the first quarter and was outscored by at least a touchdown in each of the last three quarters.

Trailing 16-0, the Cyclones struck on quarterback senior Reece Bartlett’s 61-yard TD pass to seniorTyrik Fate.

In the second quarter, senior Gavin Wiley plunged three yards for the second CCS TD and Bartlett hooked up with junior Salvador Guzman on a 68-yard scoring pass.

Bartlett added CCS’ final TD on an 8-yard keeper in the final quarter.

For Pungo, senior Benjamin Simmons rushed for two TDS and caught a pair of TD passes. Junior quarterback Nate Vanstaalduinen rifled seven TD passes. Senior Barry Radford snared six TD passes on plays of 39, 12, 15, 63, 1 and 55 yards.

Pungo wound up with a 473-344 advantage in total yardage. Vanstaalduinen connected on 9-of-12 passes for 291 yards and the seven TDs. Simmons rushed for 102 yards on a mere four carries.

For the Cyclones, Bartlett was accurate on 5-of-13 passes for 163 yards and the two TDs. He threw two interceptions. Wiley was the top CCS ground gainer with 114 yards on 21 rushes. Guzman had two receptions for 93 yards.
