RANDLEMAN — High Point Christian had Randlemannin a very tough position. But it couldn’t quite finish it off.
The Cougars scored a touchdown with 3.2 seconds eft in the game to take then lead. But the Tigers, aided by several miscues, connected on a 33-yard strike with no time left to beat HPCA 13-10 in inter-association football Friday night at Randleman’s Charles R. Gregory Stadium.
“I don’t think we brought our A-game today,” Cougars coach Scott Bell said. “I definitely think we could’ve played better on both sides of the ball. Special teams made some key mistakes, had some big penalties against us. And, as a result, the outcome wasn’t what we wanted.”
HPCA took the lead, 10-7, with 3.2 seconds left when De’shaun Taylor hit Tyeren Melton on a 5-yard pass to the right side of the end zone on fourth down. But the Cougars took a 15-yard penalty on the extra point, squirted a squib kick out of bounds near midfield and then drew a pass interference penalty well short of the end zone.
That moved the Tigers 15 yards up to the 33 and, because a game cannot end on a penalty, gave them one last shot with no time left on the clock. Quarterback Tanner McGee lofted a pass to the middle of the end zone that Tyson Green snagged amid a trio of defenders to give Randleman the win onits homecoming.
“We do take some positives out of this experience,” Bell said of his team’s go ahead drive. “Our two minute drill Thursday was awful. That’s usually what we do last in practice Thursday. And to see us come out here and drive down the field like we did is something positive we can take from this. That was great. “But to let the other team score on a Hail Mary with no time left, that’s simply unacceptable. We’ve got to fix that. … Yeah, there were some kind of freaky things at the end there. But the bottom line is: We didn’t make the plays that we needed to.”
Taylor threw for 165 yards on 17-of-32 passing with one touchdown and one interception for HPCA
(4-1), last year’s NCISAA Division III state champion. Melton finished with 101 yards receiving and one touchdown, plus led the running game with 30 yards. Austin Hendley added a 27-yard field goal in the
third quarter.
Austin Stone ran for 164 yards on 34 carries and one touchdown — which gave the Tigers the lead with 1 ½ minutes left — and tacked on 46 yards receiving to lead Randleman (5-1), a perennial contender in the NCHSAA PAC-6 2A. McGee totaled 93 yards on 7-of-13 passing as Randleman outgained the
Cougars 287-257 in total yards.
HPCA will play at home next week on homecoming against the Carolina Pride.
