Special team miscues haunt CCS in 47-22 loss
Once the ground game of the Community Christian School eight-player football team gained traction Friday night, it put up more-than-reasonable numbers against 2-A Rocky Mount Academy.
However, early miscues on special teams gave the Eagles short fields and spotted the visitors 14 easy points on the way to a 47-22 win.
CCS, a 1-A member of the Colonial Carolina Conference, fell to 0-2 and will observe the league’s Labor Day bye week next Friday before returning to face Southhampton (Virginia) Academy in its first road game on Sept. 8.
The Cyclones were also hurt by giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown. CCS trailed 25-8 at halftime and stared at a 47-14 disparity in the fourth quarter. The first three RMA possessions ended in 17 points.
“We were a lot tougher tonight,” CCS head coach Andy Jackson said. “We didn’t do good in the kickoff return game...we didn’t move the football in our first two series.”
The Cyclones rushed for 360 yards, led by the 135 yards and two TDs of Avery Winstead on 22 carries. Quarterback Chandler Conway rushed 11 times for 132 yards and had a touchdown.
Chandler Conway was 5 of 8 passing for 56 yards, completing four balls to his brother in Austin Conway for 41 yards. Winstead caught one pass for five yards.
